Today you have a full day to explore Auckland, with sights including a visit to one of Auckland’s inner city beaches; Mission Bay, where it is possible to see stunning Pohutukawa trees. The trip could also take in sights such as Mt Eden, a stunning viewpoint and one of Auckland’s most famous volcanic craters, and perhaps a gander at one of The Road Trip’s favourite look out spots that boasts great views of both Rangitoto Island and Waiheke Island. Perhaps venture out to Muriwai Beach to visit a large Gannet colony on the seaside cliffs and experience the Kauri forests of the Waitakere Ranges.

Your Day: Waiheke Island Winery Tour

This morning you will take a short walk to the Auckland ferry terminal to ferry out to Waiheke Island to enjoy a guided tour of the Island, stopping at a number of boutique wineries such as Casita Miro, Kennedy Point Winery and Stonyridge for wine tastings. You will finish your tour at Mudbrick Winery where you will enjoy a delicious lunch with incredible views out over the Hauraki Gulf towards Auckland City (lunch is additional cost). Return to Auckland in the late afternoon, and perhaps enjoy dinner at one of the wonderful waterfront restaurants that line the Viaduct Harbour.

Your Day: Auckland to Whitianga via Coromandel

South you go. Leaving New Zealand’s largest city you head for the Coromandel, one of the key locations for the New Zealand gold rush in the 1800s. You follow the coast road to the town of Coromandel, where you will take a trip on ‘The Driving Creek Railway’- New Zealand’s only narrow-gauge mountain railway, with a working pottery and wildlife sanctuary. Ride through a regenerating kauri forest to a 360 degree viewpoint at the top of the hill, looking out to the ocean and across to Auckland in the distance. From there you will take the stunning 309 Road to the coastal town of Whitianga, stopping at stunning Waiau Falls and the Waiau Kauri Grove - to see ginormous anicent kauri trees up close. You could also visit the quirky Waterworks theme park. Enjoy a fun day with heaps of creative upcycled attractions, two swimming holes, jumping boards and a huge water slide. The Waterworks will make you feel like a kid and bring back those crazy moments of genuine laughter. Arrive in Whitianga in the afternoon/evening and enjoy the beautiful Buffalo Beach.

Your Day: Whitianga and Surrounds

This morning you will enjoy a glass bottom boat cruise from Whitianga. You'll see Cathedral Cove and its fabulous white sandy beaches, iconic native New Zealand trees and incredible rock formations. Stunning volcanic coastline including sheer cliffs, towering pinnacles, blowholes and sea caves such as Orua Sea cave. Look through the glass panels to see a diverse amount of marine life including red snapper, red moki, leatherjackets and schools of demoiselles and blue mau mau. Look closely through the kelp forest to spot stingrays, crayfish and octopus. On the surface keep your eyes peeled for blue penguins, sea birds and marine mammals such as dolphins, orca and seals.

The rest of the day is free to explore the beauty of The Coromandel Peninsula. Perhaps take a walk to one of New Zealand’s most stunning beaches; Cathedral Cove where you wander through ancient native forest to the pristine beach that houses this striking rock formation. Your Day: Whitianga to Rotorua via Hobbiton

This morning you will visit the world famous Hot Water Beach. This is one of the only places in the world where one can discover thermal water underneath a beach! Bring your swimming gear, as you will have the opportunity to dig your very own thermal pool and bathe in its waters (35-40 degrees Celsius in the right areas). Following this you farewell the Coromandel and head south to Rotorua; a hot spot for Maori culture and thermal activity. En route you will visit Hobbiton and The Shire’s Rest, the only remaining film set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies. Enjoy a two hour tour of the beautiful grounds and enjoy a feast in the festive party marquee next to the Green Dragon! Arrive in Rotorua in the afternoon and you have the opportunity to take a city tour featuring Kuirau Park mud pool reserve and view the stunning government gardens and lakefront. Your first stop for the day is Waimangu Volcanic Valley - a Wonderland of Stunning Geothermal Activity. You will see the world's largest hot spring, sinter terraces and stunning hot and cold pools of many different colours. You'll also enjoy a cruise above the once famous Pink and White Terraces, buried by the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886.

This evening you will experience Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa. Your Day: Rotorua to Napier

Heading south and stopping at the mind-blowingly powerful Huka Falls en route, you will reach Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake where you may wish to stop for lunch. From here you head to the East Coast to the beautiful seaside city of Napier. Napier was flattened by an earthquake in 1931, which led to massive rebuilds in the Art Deco Style, making this iconic city a beautiful hub of period architecture, and nowadays it is also well known for producing exquisite food and wine. The region has a lovely coastal feel and along with its high annual sunshine hours, makes it perfect for growing grapes. The region’s sunnier warmer climate is most suited to Bordeaux style reds such as merlot and syrah but also fantastic chardonnay.

Today you will be exploring the city of Napier and the surrounding wine making region. This morning you will take a guided art deco walking tour to appreciate the beautiful architecture of the city. Afterwards, you will be taken on a winery tour, visiting several wineries around the Hawkes Bay area. The region is famous for their wines and have won international acclaim for both red and white varietals. There are over 70 wineries in the area and this afternoon you will visit 4 or 5 of the best, including wine tastings at each and a complementary cheese platter. Today you will take the picturesque drive through Martinborough and neighbouring towns in the Wairarapa. Perhaps pop in to Poppie's for a delightful wine tasting! Following this you will have the option to enjoy a tramp at the Putangirua Pinnacles where you can truly feel like you're on another planet. Next you will take the drive over the Remutaka Ranges to arrive in Wellington. Time dependent you will be able to discover New Zealand’s capital city. Spots on your city tour could take in sights such as Mt Victoria - Wellington’s most spectacular viewpoint with 360 degree views of the city, harbour and mountain ranges in the background, parliament and the glorious Wellington Botanic Gardens.

Today is your day to explore the Coolest Little Capital in the World! This morning you could take the Cable Car from the city up to Kelburn, where you will be able to wander the beautiful Botanical Gardens. Late morning, perhaps hop on the free shuttle to Zealandia, the world’s first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary, with an extraordinary 500-year vision to restore a Wellington valley’s forest and freshwater ecosystems as closely as possible to their pre-human state. The 225 hectare ecosanctuary is a groundbreaking conservation project that has reintroduced 18 species of native wildlife back into the area, 6 of which were previously absent from mainland New Zealand for over 100 years. Tonight why not enjoy one of the delicious restaurants the city is famous for? Wellington is known as the cultural capital of New Zealand and due to its small size, the majority of the city can easily be covered on foot.

This morning you will farewell the North Island and sail to Picton in the stunning Marlborough Sounds, the gateway to the biggest wine producing district in New Zealand, Marlborough. Marlborough produces roughly 70% of New Zealand’s exported wine volume.

The Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough has long been considered among the finest examples in the world. The district is split into two main valleys with most of the wineries situated in the Waiau River Valley. Further south the Awatere River Valley produces its own distinctive styles of wine reflective of their different geography and climate. The reason the Marlborough region has been so successful in wine production is due to the high sunshine hours, cool nights and the free draining alluvial soils. Today you will have plenty of tasting on the cards!

Next up, check out the beautiful Truman Track down to the beach, or a section of the Pororari River Track. Driving South down the coast from Punakaiki, check out the stunning Hokitika Gorge with its beautiful bright blue waters and surrounding native forest. Arrive in Franz Josef Glacier early afternoon, where you will spend the next night in the beautiful town surrounded by rainforest. Tonight you will have the chance to relax and unwind with a private soak provided by Waiho Hot Tubs, nestled in a lush rainforest setting (optional - extra cost).

This morning you will fly over both the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, soaring first over the townships and then following the ice of the glaciers high up into the upper reaches. Land in the snow at the head of one of the glaciers and survey the path the glacier has carved below you. Franz Josef Glacier is one of only three glaciers in the world to be surrounded by rainforest!

The rest of today is free to explore the beautiful and serene West Coast. One option is an excursion our favourite local spot, Okarito beach, which is one most scenic isolated wilderness spots on the West Coast. Tonight perhaps enjoy a dip in the glacier hot pools (optional - additional cost).

Your Day: Franz Josef Glacier to Lake Wānaka

One of the most dramatic journeys in the country is what you can experience on your drive over the Haast Pass through to Wānaka. En route you will visit Lake Matheson, otherwise known as ‘Mirror Lakes’ where on a clear day it is possible to see the reflection of New Zealand’s highest mountain Aoraki/Mt Cook (3754m/12,316ft). The walking possibilities are endless today around Haast and Haast Pass and you can choose from several nature walks, some of which feature spectacular waterfalls and deep blue coloured pools where it is possible to see trout swimming. One of our favourite spots at The Road Trip is Ship Creek, an isolated beach featuring native totara trees hugging rugged coastline. Tonight you stay in Wānaka, one of New Zealand’s most popular holiday spots.

Following this, perhaps enjoy a wine tasting at Amisfield Bistro & Cellar Door, overlooking the stunning Lake Hayes. Your Day: Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) Day Trip

Be prepared for one of the jewels of the New Zealand landscape! The drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound is one of the most spectacular in the world and certainly a highlight on any New Zealand tour. En route you will see spectacular valleys, breath taking mountains and hopefully spot the cheeky Kea (New Zealand’s mountain parrot). This morning you will experience all that the fjords have to offer with a 1 hour 45 minute cruise, featuring pristine waterfalls and towering mountains plunging into the Tasman Sea (included activity). Keep a look out for dolphins, seals and the Fiordland crested Penguin. On your trip back to Te Anau there is the opportunity to take some short walks in the Fiordland National Park.

This morning in Te Anau you will take a tour by boat across Lake Te Anau to the glow worm caves to view the shimmering light of thousands of luminous glow-worms in a 12,000 year old grotto.

Following this, you will head to Queenstown, ‘New Zealand’s adventure capital of the world’. Skirting your way around Lake Wakatipu makes for some stunning photography and you will be amazed by the Remarkables Mountain Range, one of the most famous back drops for Lord of the Rings. The afternoon is free to spend as you wish in Queenstown, and there is plenty to see and do! Perhaps enjoy a walk around the botanic gardens on the lake, enjoy a drop of Central Otago pinot noir at a nearby winery, or sample some fresh local cuisine on offer on the lakefront.

This morning is free to explore Queenstown at leisure and take part in some of the fantastic activities that this ‘Adventure Capital of the World’ has to offer. If you feel like taking a more relaxed approach to the day, a cruise on the TSS Earnslaw 100 year old steam ship or a walk through Queenstown’s Botanic Gardens are not to be missed.

Your Day: Queenstown to Dunedin via St Bathans

The first part of your drive takes you through the scenic Kawarau Gorge. Further down the road you could stop in the town of Cromwell to visit one of our favourite orchards to sample fresh fruit, real fruit ice cream and New Zealand Manuka Honey. Worth stopping at on the way also is Clyde, a town with a real wild-west feel to it that at the peak of the gold rush was home to thousands of miners from all over the world. It is also where one of New Zealand’s largest open-faced hydraulic power stations is located. From here, heading through the pastures of Otago you will experience ‘the south at its best’ driving through picturesque little villages such as St Bathans where there is a beautiful lake crafted from an old gold-mine. Marvel at the carved limestone cliffs and perhaps take a dip or enjoy a beer at the historic pub. Your final part of the drive takes you to Dunedin, “Scotland of the South.” In the evening you may wish to make a visit to the historic Speights Brewery for some sampling of one of New Zealand’s most iconic beers (optional – extra cost).

In and around Dunedin there is much to see and explore. In the morning your Dunedin city tour could include sights such as Baldwin Street, ‘The Steepest Street in the World’ with gradients reaching up to 35%! Other sights include the historic railway building, university campus buildings and the Otago Museum. In the afternoon you will take a tour out to the penguin colony to view yellow eyed penguins, the world’s rarest (included activity). Following this, head down the road to the albatross colony on the peninsula to view these magnificent huge birds up close. Today we farewell the Scotland of the South and head north through the legendary Moeraki Boulders. These boulders are actually concretions that have been exposed through shoreline erosion from coastal cliffs that back the beach, some of which weigh several tonnes and are up to 3 metres in diameter. Next stop is the town of Oamaru, famous for its Oamaru Stone heritage buildings. From here, continue to Christchurch.

This morning we recommend an introduction to Christchurch with a scenic drive around the extinct volcanic crater of Banks Peninsula. Visit picturesque harbour side villages, stop for a coffee or tea and a walk down to Diamond Harbour Wharf before returning to the city centre.

Around lunchtime today you will enjoy a cultural food tour with Āmiki Tours. Āmiki's tours are about sharing their ancestors cultural stories, and the narrative of the diverse people which now call Ōtautahi Christchurch home. They do this this through meandering through our less known areas and tasting our way through our local food and wine. It’s about getting out and about and walking to your destinations and discovering our Māori and settler heritage and connecting you with the exquisite hard to find local establishments with unique stories to share.

The rest of the day is free to explore Christchurch with your tour guide.
